Event Details

Clipperton is an uninhabited French island located 1250 kilometers from the Mexican coast.  The island’s history just as much as its ecosystem are utterly unique, and continue to reside well outside human experience, something increasingly rare in today’s world.

The Clipperton Project has invited a group of 16 artists and scientists from 6 different countries on the three-week journey to this completely isolated French atoll in November 2011.  The scientists will undertake studies on Climate Change and the Biosphere whilst artists produce work based on the history of the island and the voyage there.

This event will explore the ideas behind this exceptional, multi-disciplinary project, and reveal what the participants hope to achieve from taking part.  Speakers include:

Jon Bonfiglio: Project Director and Expedition Leader

Charles Engebretsen: Sculptor

Gordon Liddle: freelance Consultant (chair)

Elaine Shemilt: Creative Director, Centre for Remote Environments, University of Dundee

DOORS OPEN: 10.30am

A discussion event of interest to artists, scientists, gallery and museum curators, exhibition makers, project managers and arts professionals.  Organised by VAGA, Visual Arts and Galleries Association, during the Edinburgh Art Festival, with support from Creative Scotland, The Anglo Mexican Foundation (Mexico) and Miura Design (UK).  Further details from: ben@vaga.co.uk
